Water pillows have been gaining in popularity lately, but before you decide to rush out and buy one, it is important to remember that a water pillow is not just a pillow full of water. Instead, it is usually a water bladder base attached to a polyester fiber layer floating on top. This means a water pillow could be more accurately described as a combination water-fiber pillow.

The combination of water and fiber permits filling the bladder incrementally to allow a choice of water volume for soft, medium and firm support levels. Users can add or subtract water to change the denseness of the pillow and the more water within the pillow, the higher and firmer it will become. The bladder is usually made from a leak-resistant vinyl water bag that is covered with soft, hypoallergenic polyester fiber that is conveniently machine washable. Most good water pillows are also sized to accommodate standard size pillow cases.

Water pillow manufacturers often claim that their product will provide the most luxurious, rejuvenating sleep of your life and add that a higher quality of sleep will also help you look and feel better overall. Water pillows are touted as a way to restore your energy and reverse the negative effects of fatigue. When you can sleep better, you might even look better too as some manufacturers claim that better sleep allows the skin to rejuvenate and eases wrinkles too. The logic is that undisturbed sleep can help soothe the stresses of daily life and improve performance in all waking tasks.

Even though the claims might sound a bit fantastic, various studies, including one carried out at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine have shown that water pillows do reduce pain and improve the quality of sleep. The doctors at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine found that water pillows ranked high in all aspects of sleep quality including how fast subjects fell asleep, how few times they woke up and the overall quality of their sleep. A water pillow quickly conforms to retain proper support as the pillow adjusts to the head and neck areas, allowing them to relax without suffering with any pressure points. The pillow’s shaping properties are almost unlimited and a water-filled pillow is also unlikely to bunch, shift, or have hollow spots, making it ideal for use as a neck support pillow to reduce neck and back pain.

Are water pillows perfect in every aspect? No pillow is absolutely perfect in every possible application and water pillows are no exception to the rule. Because they are filled with water, they can weigh quite a bit. When filled to capacity, some water pillows can weigh over 15 pounds, making them a bit of a handful to shift around in bed and they might be too heavy for people with bad backs. Another small problem with water pillows can be the way they sound, especially when partially filled. If you shift around in bed a lot, a half-filled water pillow can sound a bit like a bucket of water sloshing around, and that is not really very conducive to a good night’s rest.

Despite the minor drawbacks, water pillows can be a real solution for people who have tried many other types of pillows and just can’t seem to find one that supports their head and neck completely and comfortably. Over one million water pillows have already been sold in the United States though, and that is a pretty good testament to their overall efficacy.

Many studies have been conducted on the relationship between a good night’s sleep and good health. People who don’t get enough sleep are often the same people who complain about neck and back pain the next day, making it obvious that the position you sleep in and the bedding you use are both important factors affecting sleep quality. Sleeping incorrectly can give you back and neck pain, stomach troubles and even premature wrinkles and saggy skin.

Sleeping on your back has long been considered one of the best positions for your body unless you are a constant snorer. Sleeping on your back allows your head, neck, and spine to maintain a neutral position and can help prevent neck and back pain, reduce acid reflux problems while minimizing wrinkly skin at the same time. Sleeping on your back helps fight acid reflux because the head is elevated and your stomach will be below your esophagus so any excess stomach acid can’t come back up. Back-sleeping can also help prevent wrinkly skin on your face because there is nothing is pushing against your face in that position. Some sleep experts even say that back-sleeping can help prevent saggy breasts because the weight of the breasts is fully supported. Sleeping on the back can present problems for people who snore though. Most researchers recommend snorers use just one puffy pillow to keep their head and neck supported without propping the head up so much that it adds to an existing snoring problem.

Sleep experts generally consider sleeping on your side as the next best position for addressing neck and back pain, reducing acid reflux, snoring less, and sleeping during pregnancy. Physical therapists often recommend that side sleepers use just one thick pillow to fill the space above your shoulders so that the head and neck are supported in a neutral position during sleep. Although side-sleeping may be the next best thing to sleeping on your back, the one downside is that pressing one side of your face into a pillow can cause wrinkles and saggy skin. For women, side-sleeping can also contribute to sagging breasts since they are unsupported in a downward position that can stretch the ligaments.

The third choice in sleeping positions is usually what is called the fetal position since it mimics a baby curled up in the womb with the knees pulled up high and the chin tucked into the chest. This less-than-desirable position is sometimes employed by those attempting to snore less or by pregnant women who can’t get comfortable in any other positions. The fetal position is not recommended for anyone with back problems or joint pain and it obviously will not prevent wrinkles either. The fetal position can also restrict diaphragm movement and aggravate existing breathing problems. Sleep researchers recommend that fetal position sleepers try not to tuck their body into an extreme curl and use only one plump pillow to give the head and neck adequate support.

Most medical professionals agree that sleeping on the stomach is the worst way to sleep. It may ease snoring a bit, but it can also put too much pressure on joints and muscles at night, which can irritate nerves and lead to pain, numbness, and tingling the next day. Because the stomach position requires the head to be turned to one side for hours at a time there’s a good chance it will eventually cause problems later on.

Because we spend nearly a full third of our lives sleeping, your choice of pillow is often far more important than you might think. The category of pillows designed to reduce chronic neck pain are known neck pillows, and they can make a real difference to help relieve headaches, tension, and general neck pain.

It has been shown that neck pillows can actually improve your posture by supporting the head and neck more correctly as you sleep. Although pain pillows are not generally used as sleeping pillows, studies have shown that using neck pillows can significantly reduce pain and improves quality of sleep. One study found that using neck pillows for one full year helped over 80% of 60 neck pain sufferers to realize clinically significant neck pain relief. In general, the use of neck pillows can reduce morning neck and back pain as well as reduce overall neck discomfort for chronic neck pain sufferers.

The unique design of neck pillows allows them to more fully support the head and neck by using the principle of traction to help restore normal neck posture and function. The traction effect means neck pillows use gravity along with the weight of your head to gently apply traction to the neck to greatly reduce the incidence of headaches, tension, and neck pain. Many daily activities encountered both at work and at home can lead to poor posture habits that can cause tense muscles and irritated nerves in the neck and back. Slouching while typing at work or sleeping with your neck unsupported in an odd position can be a literal pain in the neck. A neck pillow stretches the neck to relax your tense muscles and pinched nerves. As the muscles in the front of the neck are stretched, the neck joints are better positioned to reduce tension and help restore the normal position and range of motion of the neck bones and related joints. Over time, unrelieved neck problems can cause pain, headaches, nerve irritation and subtle degenerative changes.

A dedicated neck pain pillow can work to reverse the tension in the neck caused by constant leaning forward and bending the head down. Neck pain pillows are not designed for all-night use as a sleeping pillow and should only be used it for about one hour at a time.

If you want better neck support throughout the night, you would be wise to seek a pillow in the neck support category that is designed to cradle your neck in its natural position as you sleep. Neck support pillows are usually made of dense fiber to deliver better cervical support all night long. Most good neck support pillows will also fit conveniently right into a standard-size pillowcase too.

Most neck support pillows employ a trapezoid shape in the center of the pillow to support the neck in a natural position. The unique design of neck support pillows mean they will properly support your neck even if you roll around in bed and change sleeping positions many times a night. While neck support pillows are used mostly to treat neck pain, they can also help to reduce airway blockage during sleep and will actually help reduce the incidence of snoring in the process. If your significant other is keeping you up at night with snoring, you might want to buy them a good neck support pillow so that you can get a good night’s sleep yourself. Although some people experience immediate relief when sleeping with a neck support pillow, others may have to employ them for a few weeks before their neck and back muscles can get adjusted to sleeping in their correct position.

If you’re the type of person that has trouble falling asleep and you constantly need to flip your pillow over when it gets too hot on one side, help may be on the way in the form of new self-cooling pillows on the market today. Self cooling pillows do not need water, electricity or refrigeration. In addition to being an aid to great sleep, self-cooling pillows can also offer a variety of other health and comfort benefits. Plus, they automatically renew themselves to keep you cool again the next night.

The idea of self-cooling pillows got started as a way to provide people with a cooler pillow after it was discovered that temperature is very closely related to good sleep. It was also found that cool pillows can help with many common health problems. It was found that complaints ranging from headaches to menopause-related hot flashes, fibromyalgia, and even Multiple Sclerosis, could all be addressed and improved by sleeping with a cooler pillow at night. Self-cooling pillows work by absorbing your body and head heat and then discharging it back into the environment for a continuous cooling effect. A self-cooling pillow will always feel cool because it will always be at a lower temperature than your body is.

The new breed of self-cooling pillows are constructed with an inner packet of natural, non-toxic minerals and crystals blended and formulated to deliver a constant coolness. Unlike refrigerated gel inserts that deliver a shockingly cold first contact and lose their cool from that point on, self-cooling pillows provide a lower-level cooling that relaxes and refreshes you while you sleep. A self-cooling pillow absorbs your body heat into the mineral crystals and turns them into a liquid. The crystals will later release the heat energy and then turn back into a solid state, and the pillow is ready to use again the next night. A self-cooling pillow will usually always stay at a comfortable temperature of around 77 degrees, which is about twenty degrees cooler than the average body temperature of 98.6 degrees.

The cooling effect frees you from having to toss and turn your pillow all night long just to find a cool spot, and self-cooling means they are never cold, wet, or otherwise uncomfortable. Because self-cooling pillows are sold as either complete pillows or as inserts designed to fit inside a normal bed pillow liner, and they are completely sealed to prevent leakage or contamination, they are simple to use and virtually maintenance free and are a definite step up from traditional cooling pads and pillows that that require electricity or refrigeration.

One of the most important aspects of sleep, next to your bed, is your pillow. Your pillow supports your neck and upper back as you sleep and a good pillow can be the perfect remedy for restless sleep or neck or back cramps throughout the day. Though your bed and mattress can last you a lifetime, the life of your pillow is certainly finite, and using your pillow beyond its useful lifetime can lead to sleep related maladies, such as soreness or poor sleep.

Manufacturers will claim that a pillow will last about two years. The actual lifetime will vary based on how active of a sleeper you are, and what kind of material the pillow is made of.

Though feather pillows might be the fluffiest and some of the softest pillows on the market, they tend to become worn out the fastest. A high quality feather pillow will last over a year if it is properly taken care of. If you have any questions about whether you should consider replacing your feather pillows, simply rest your head on it without fluffing it up. If the pillow requires fluffing or significant ‘punching up’, in order to provide adequate support for your neck, it really is time to start looking for a new pillow or restless nights may lie ahead.

In other pillows, the first indication that your pillow may be in need of retiring is a lumpiness in its foam stuffing. This is usually a result of having absorbed moisture, and not only makes for uncomfortable sleeping, but is also unsanitary. The washing machine can rectify the hygiene aspect, but will just make the pillow lumpier and even more uncomfortable for your night’s rest. Even if you prefer your pillows lumpy, a sure sign that a pillow is no longer giving you the support you need is the fold test. Simply fold your pillow in half. If it does not immediately unfold itself then you are in dire need of a new pillow.

Hopefully these tips will keep your head resting on a perfectly soft and supportive pillow whenever you nap or retire for the night. And remember, a good night’s sleep is important for the mind and body, so don’t feel guilty for spoiling yourself with a high quality pillow.

If you find yourself plagued by a sore and stiff neck, there can be many contributing factors. Sitting at a computer for hours can be a culprit. Psychological problems such as depression and worrying can also cause problems. Demanding work conditions and stress often play a role in neck stiffness. A good night’s sleep can often alleviate or banish neck soreness and stiffness, but if you still find yourself suffering after a night’s sleep, it may be time to consider the type of pillow you use. The wrong type of pillow or number of pillows used can be a problem keeping you from getting the rejuvenating rest you need. A simple change can often make a world of difference in your quality of sleep and resulting energy levels.

There are many pillow products available to help with neck problems. When choosing the right pillow for you, it is important to find one that won’t compress over time. Many down and foam pillows start off at the right thickness but later compress to a point where they are no longer beneficial. Your chosen pillow needs to be firm enough for support and soft enough to provide comfortable rest.

Pillows which utilize the type of memory foam construction are often good candidates for relieving neck pain. Because they slightly compress to conform to your head’s size without flattening, you are provided adequate support at an optimum comfort level. Many pillows are designed with some aspect of this function, whether they use pieces of foam or are pre-formed to provide optimum support. The important factor in these pillows is the resistance to deflating or compressing, resulting in an unnatural sleep position.

Ultimately, the way you sleep and your sleeping surface should be your criteria for choosing a pillow. The softer your bed, the more your body will settle into it, determining the position of your pillow. a variable or adjustable height pillow can help in this type of situation. Cervical neck pillows can be good for changing positions during sleep without waking up. Body pillows can be a great solution for side sleepers in improving posture and comfort. No matter what your sleeping pattern is, you can find a pillow to help you avoid neck pain and stiffness.

If you have done any amount of traveling, you are well aware that comfort is a very valuable commodity. Long plane or train trips present serious challenges to travelers trying to avoid neck or back pain, as well as arrive at their destination adequately rested. The confined quarters of plane and train seats, particularly over long periods of time, can become uncomfortable and make it difficult to sleep or relax. Many experienced travelers use travel pillows to help them out. The following paragraphs will outline how travel pillows can help you sleep and relax as well as a few of the different types of travel pillows available.

Quite simply, travel pillows offer essential support and comfort where it is difficult to be comfortable otherwise. For long car, plane or train rides, many people can only lean against their head against the window or rest their chin on their chest. Neither of these solutions offers much comfort or support for the neck and does absolutely nothing for the back. Travel pillows comfortably support the neck and head and others are available to support the lower back to help you sleep and relax.

Inflatable neck pillows are popular for a couple reasons. They are very compact which makes them easy to store in luggage when not in use. Further, you can inflate it to the firmness that will best help you sleep and relax.

For those not as concerned with space, contour travel pillows are a popular option. These travel pillows are generally horseshoe or rectangular in shape to comfortably support the neck and head.

Memory foam travel pillows are a little more expensive, but have key benefits. The memory foam is activated by the heat of the body to conform exactly to the head and neck for a custom level of support and comfort. This personal fit can greatly reduce aches and pains usually associated with travel.

Lumbar cushions are designed to fit into the small of the back to offer better support than car or airline seats. Nearly everyone can lament how uncomfortable it can be to sit for long periods of time without adequate back support. These small and comfortable travel pillows solve this problem to help get you to your destination feeling great.

A good restful night of sleep is very valuable and sorely missed when not gotten. We are all familiar with nights spent tossing and turning, unable to get comfortable, and waking up without feeling rested and refreshed. A lot of advertising and marketing is directed towards mattresses, but pillows are often overlooked when it comes to the essentials for a good night sleep. The following paragraphs will outline why investing in a good pillow can help you sleep better at night.

One of the most important elements for a comfortable and restful night of sleep is the proper alignment of your head, neck and spine. Proper alignment is important to help your spine relax in a neutral position as well to promote good blood circulation and allow your muscles to rest. The pillow is an essential part of this equation. Even with a good mattress, you will not sleep your best without a good pillow.

Most people cannot remember the last time they bought a pillow, which means that it has been far too long. After enough use, a pillow will not support your neck and head as it first did, and as a result your spine will not be able to relax in a neutral position. Most pillows need to be replaced every 6 months to 2 years, depending on the quality and use.

Not all pillows are equal. It is important to invest in a quality pillow that matches your sleeping style. Each sleeping position needs a different type of pillow to help support good head, neck and spine alignment. For those that sleep on their back, a flat pillow will best facilitate keeping your head, neck and spine aligned as straight as possible. Side-sleepers need a firmer and deeper pillow to make up for the depth of the shoulder. Stomach sleepers may vary, depending on whether they support their head on their arm or not.

When investing in a pillow to help you sleep better, remember to consider your sleeping style and that the goal is to keep your head, neck and spine in a straight alignment.

Do you prefer a soft or firm pillow? This type is best suited to you? When choosing the right pillow, it is important to consider the properties, benefits and advantages of both. Each type of firmness or softness has its benefits, depending on what type of sleeper you are.

People who sleep on their stomachs or backs should choose softer pillows. Soft pillows provide excellent support for stomach sleepers by cradling the head without forcing it out of alignment. People who are more petite in size are often served better by choosing a soft pillow as are those whole like scrunching up their pillows. Sometimes a medium pillow will serve better than a soft pillow for back sleepers. By offering a little more support, they help keep the sleeper’s head aligned properly with the spine. While still soft, the medium pillow is often used by those who prefer a little more support.

Firm pillows are best for side sleepers. These types of sleepers have a larger space between the head and neck that needs to be comfortably filled. Firm pillows more adequately fill this space, making for less neck strain and soreness upon awakening. These pillows help keep the neck and spine aligned, providing for better sleep posture and more restful sleep. Firm pillows are also better suited for larger or taller people due to the extra support they provide.

When looking for the right pillow, whether it’s soft or firm, keep in mind that the material can be as important as the desired softness or firmness. Material that conforms to the head and neck’s contours without too much compression will offer the greatest comfort. If allergies are a problem, many pillows come in soft or firm comfort levels that also battle allergens through special materials. Hypoallergenic synthetic filling that resembles down is popular as well as fabric that keeps out dust mites. Body pillows are another popular choice that help with body support and relieving different types of body discomfort.

Pillows are an important part of our sleep, making the difference between a good night’s rest or chronic body pain. Whether you prefer soft or firm, there is a pillow out there made just right that will help you get the comfort you need.
